Biodiesel Facts
Thursday 31st July, 2008

There's much information floating about regarding biodiesel, some true and some not.

There are two main reasons for this: One, certain plastics and rubbers are degraded by exposure to high percentages of biodiesel. Conventional elastomers and natural rubbers will be rapidly degraded by constant exposure to biodiesel, so pure or high percentage blends of biodiesel are not recommended for engines that use elastomers and natural rubber tubing. Replacing these parts with chemically compatible synthetic tubing is possible, however, and eliminates this problem for vehicle owners deciding to run with pure bio diesel. This ensures maximum compatibility with petroleum diesel and causes no erratic performance problems. Due to its high environmental safety factor, its comparative performance to conventional fuels, and its ability to improve engine efficiency, soybean biodiesel had officially been recognized by the EPA as a viable alternative fuel source and a fuel additive, and has enjoyed increased attention from international corporate investors as well at the endorsement of environmental groups. Hybrid Cars are the other alternative adding $12,000 to the cost of the same model in petrol on average. Biodiesel New Zealand products have actually been around in New Zealand for a lot longer than most people would think. Made from natural materials, most commonly soybeans, biodiesel provides an alternative to regular diesel fuels that is comparable in terms of performance, but without the environmental risks. Field tests in New Zealand have shown that biodiesel can be used in conventional diesel fuel engines without requiring any mechanical modifications.

Understanding "Beginning Construction" Under Section 1603
The Treasury Department recently issued a series of FAQs in an effort to clarify when projects will be treated as having "begun construction" for purposes of the section 1603 grant. As you may be aware, a project that otherwise qualifies for the grant but is not placed in service before the end of 2010 may still be eligible for the grant if construction on the project is begun in 2009 or 2010 and the project is eventually placed in service before the applicable "credit termination date." The new FAQs address a number of the unanswered questions. However, the framework adopted by the Treasury Guidance and the new FAQs is complex, and there appears to be a considerable amount of confusion among developers about how the "beginning construction" requirement can be met. Therefore, we thought it important to issue this alert.

Turkish Renewable Energy May Feed EU Grid
Turkey plans to connect to the European electrical grid this month using GE's smart grid technology. The Turkish Electricity Transmission Company (TEIAS) will now be able to buy and sell power in the European electricity market, hopefully expanding the reliability and availability of energy, especially renewable energy, throughout all of Europe.

Green Collars--Where are the Jobs?
What about a recently laid-off woman who now pushes a reel mower yard to yard to make money? Would lawn lady's be a green job created, a general job lost, or would the two cancel one another for a net job gain of zero?

A Textbook Example: Why American Schools Must Go Green
Schools are a black hole for energy consumption. The buildings, which often serve as the hub of communities, are open from early morning to late at night. With air conditioning or heating systems that run continually, it is not unusual for a single building to use hundreds of thousands of gallons of fossil fuel each year. While this energy consumption is a major concern to students, teachers, administrators and the community – who all wish to lessen dependence on fossil fuels – school systems are moving at a glacial pace when it comes to making environmentally conscious decision regarding what technologies should power their facilities.

Israel and U.S. Cooperate on Renewables
We may be getting close to negotiations between the U.S., Israel and the Palestinians. While we wait for those talks to begin, we can at least partner on other, less politically volatile things, right?

Project to Harness Energy from Breaking Trains
A company developing a "recycled" energy project from breaking trains in Philadelphia has been awarded a major grant by the state of Pennsylvania.

Power Transmission -- Yes, the Problem is Real

New construction strategies emerge for farshore, deepwater wind farms
Despite a buoyant European offshore wind market, offshore construction & installation contractors that fall short of budget and technology challenges risk falling by the wayside. Utility scale developers at the forefront will be seeking out only companies capable of providing and meeting the necessary challenges imposed on the industry today.
